SHIBUYA

The megalopolis of Tokyo has inspired many cyberpunk universes, as in the game of the same name in which it is featured, as well as representing others.

Indeed, the country is known for its dynamic and growing technological progress.

It is an example of modernity and appeals in particular to generations of teenagers and young adults by touching in particular the fields of video games, animated films and mangas.

Its influence is undeniable: Japan is one of the most appreciated countries in the world. In fact, in 2022, it is considered the most technologically advanced country according to the egscholars.com website.

Une allée commerciale à Tokyo

From a tourist point of view, Tokyo is appreciated for its large shopping alleys lit with neon advertising and its skyscrapers mixed with the famous traditional Japanese architecture.

Being the scene of many events related to geek culture, the capital is also a highly commercial place with many stores dedicated to manga, Japanese animation and video games.

The worldwide appreciation of Japan and Tokyo has raised the question of cultural appropriation as it has been reproduced: European and American manga, Asian imitation, cosplays, conventions like the Japan Expo in Paris.

The Cyberpunk genre draws its inspiration from Tokyo, but it also develops there. On the one hand, it takes the aesthetics of the skyscrapers and neon advertisements of the capital and of Japanese fashion as well as its technological progress, on the other hand it is represented a lot in all Japan.

Kawasaki Warehouse, also known as the 'arcade', is a building with a design and architecture strongly reminiscent of a cyberpunk atmosphere (many rusty metal parts, neon lights, industrial atmosphere) while offering retro arcade terminals, casino games, a manga area or pool tables.

Shibuya, a district of Tokyo founded in 1932, is notably known for its presence in geek culture: it appears for example in Jet Set Radio and The World Ends with You, or in the famous manga Jujutsu Kaisen. It is an example of cyberpunk inspiration as for the commercial alleys illuminated by neon advertising.
